Why is Triton Bay so rich in soft coral?
Triton Bay has some of the densest soft coral in Indonesia because its water is full of plankton. Soft corals such as Dendronephthya do not depend mainly on sunlight like hard corals do; they feed by catching plankton from the current, so green, nutrient-rich water suits them.
The low light also allows species that usually live deep to grow near the surface. Black coral bushes, normally found below 30 m, can be seen here at 10 to 15 m. The result is a reef that looks very different from the clear-water reefs of Raja Ampat, a few hundred kilometres to the north.
Surveys led by Conservation International in 2006 recorded several fish species new to science in the Kaimana area, including the Triton Bay walking shark, and helped establish the regency's marine protected area network.
