Between Bali and Komodo lies Sumbawa, a large, dry island ringed by small volcanic islands that very few divers ever see. A liveaboard crossing turns the gap into one of the most varied routes in Indonesia.
A Sumbawa liveaboard follows the north coast of Sumbawa between Bali and Komodo National Park, stopping at islands that are too far from either end for day trips: Moyo, Satonda, Sangeang and Gili Banta. In the Neptune fleet this is Neptune One's 9-night Bali to Komodo crossing, which runs once a year in June as the boat moves east for the Komodo season. It ends in Labuan Bajo, where guests can continue on a Komodo liveaboard or fly home.
The route links two famous dive regions through a much less visited one. Divers see the volcanic black sand reefs of Sangeang Api, the salt crater lake of Satonda, turtles at Moyo and, in season, whale sharks in Saleh Bay. Departing from Bali also removes one domestic flight, which is useful for travellers starting their trip there. Sumbawa is also home to Mount Tambora, whose 1815 eruption was the largest in recorded history and caused the "year without a summer" in Europe and North America in 1816. The best time for a Sumbawa liveaboard is the dry season from May to October, when the seas along the north coast are calm and visibility is at its best. Neptune One's crossing runs in June, at the start of this window.
Sumbawa is one of the driest islands in Indonesia, and from May to October it sees very little rain. From December to March the northwest monsoon brings swell to the north coast, and liveaboards rarely make the crossing. Whale sharks are seen at the bagans in Saleh Bay mainly in the dry season.
The highlights of the crossing are the volcanic reefs of Sangeang Api, the walls of Moyo and Satonda, the current-swept reefs of Gili Banta and, for snorkellers, whale sharks in Saleh Bay.

Satonda is a small volcanic island off the north coast of Sumbawa whose crater holds a lake saltier than the sea. The lake is thought to have been filled by seawater entering the crater, and evaporation has concentrated the salt since.
Scientists have studied the lake's microbial reefs as a living model of conditions in ancient oceans. For visitors, the attraction is simpler: a short walk from the beach to the rim, a swim in unusually buoyant water, and, at dusk, thousands of fruit bats leaving the island to feed.
Sangeang Api is an active volcano on an island off northeast Sumbawa. Its last major eruption, in May 2014, sent ash high enough to close airports in northern Australia. Underwater, gas vents and warm black sand create unusual dives where bubbles stream from the seabed among sponges and soft coral.
The black sand also suits critters, and the muck dives near the village of Bontoh are among the best of the crossing. Liveaboards check the volcano's status before visiting, and the island is skipped when activity levels are raised.
Saleh Bay is a large bay on the north coast of Sumbawa where whale sharks gather around bagans, the floating platforms used by local fishermen. As in Cenderawasih Bay and Triton Bay, the sharks feed on small fish attracted by the platforms' lights.

Moyo is a forested island off the north coast of Sumbawa, protected as a nature park. Its reefs are known for hawksbill and green turtles, and on land a short walk leads to the Mata Jitu waterfall, where tiered pools of turquoise water are fed by a spring.

The crossing starts in Bali. Guests are collected from Denpasar airport (DPS) or Bali hotels before 12:00 on day one, and the trip ends in Labuan Bajo, with a transfer to Komodo Airport (LBJ) or a local hotel.
